Default Train derailment near Mingela continuing to cause disruptions

Queensland Rail says a weekend train derailment in the state's north is continuing to cause disruptions to passenger and freight services on the Mount Isa-to-Townsville line. Crews are continuing to work on cleaning up a zinc concentrate spill after 21 carriages tipped over near Mingela, south of Townsville.

The rail line remains closed. Environment Minister Andrew Powell says it will take several days to clean up. He says the concentrate has the potential to self-combust if combined with water. "It will be an extensive job and it's going to require earth-working material, diggers and excavators and so on," he said. "What we have done in the interim is to contain that into a pond of zinc concentrate so we can ensure that it doesn't get out into the broader environment."

Mr Powell says investigations into what caused the derailment are ongoing. "We had officers on the ground at the direction of the [Queensland] Fire and Rescue Service - who I might add - did a fantastic job over the weekend," he said. "Between those officers and representatives from my Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, we've been able to contain most of the material so that there's no risk of environmental harm."
