Default Mount Isa to Townsville rail line reopens ahead of schedule

Queensland Rail says passenger and freight services have resumed on the Mount Isa to Townsville line in the state's north, one week ahead of schedule.

The railway line was closed nearly two weeks ago after a freight train derailed about 90 kilometres from Townsville.

Twenty-one wagons came off the track near Mingela and six spilt their cargo of zinc concentrate.

The railway line is now back in action after crews re-laid more than 400 metres of track.

Queensland Rail chief executive Jim Benstead says it is still working with freight operator Aurizon to determine the cause of the derailment.

He says it is still too early to speculate on the outcome of the investigation.

Inlander services have resumed and are operating as normal.
