A valuable contribution of $200,000 from the State Government to the Flinders Shire EcoWalk

A significant regional beautification project on the Flinders River at Hughenden received a major boost today.

Phil Reeves, MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier presented a cheque for $200,000 to Flinders Deputy Mayor, Cr Greg Jones at the site of the rapidly developing “Eco-Walk on Flinders”.

Mr Reeves, the Member for Mansfield, was on a goodwill tour of the northern region with State MP for Mt Isa, Betty Kiernan.

The cheque was available from the State Government’s Legacy Infrastructure Program that is providing $100 million of capital works to mark Queensland’s 150th anniversary in 2009.

Mr Jones said the cheque, which represented half the $400,000 project, was much appreciated.

“Council has been busy for the past six months changing the face of the riverbank from an over-grown, weed affected area to a rapidly-emerging scenic park interpreting the natural flora of the shire area,” he said.

The project, creating 1.8 km of walking trails along the banks of Queensland’s longest river, would become a living monument to Queensland’s 150th anniversary and was already attracting the attention of visitors.

Council’s visionary effort will include interpretive shelters reflecting four of Queensland’s 13 bioregions – the Einasleigh Uplands, Desert Uplands, Gulf Plains and Mitchell Grass Downs.

More than 13,000 tons of Basalt rock, sandstone and granite, coupled with plantings, drip irrigation, shelters, BBQs, toilets and public art will all combine to create a spectacular visual effect.

Mr Reeves and Mrs Kiernan praised the council for the way in which it had involved the community.

Mrs Kiernan said the project would contribute to the Flinders Highway experience with many travellers taking time out to stop and experience the Shire’s unique landscapes.

Flinders’ Ecowalk was one of 91 projects across the state that will create a valuable legacy of Queensland’s 150th anniversary and a lasting tribute to the Shire’s history.

The State Government, when considering projects for funding through the legacy program, was looking for practical tributes that would provide lasting benefits.

Work will be completed on the Flinders River project in late 2008.

Meanwhile, applications close on April 28 for entries in a public art competition relevant to the vision and themes of the Flinders River Q150 project.
