Towers Birdkeepers

As our name suggests, we are a group of people who have a love of caged birds, their management and breeding.
We are a small friendly club, who get together on the second Sunday of each month to share our experiences, opinions and love of our hobby. We meet at 2.00pm, at various members’ homes, to socialize and catch up.
Some of our members have a large collection of various types of birds, from finches to cockatoos. Others have a more concentrated collection of maybe only one or two varieties of bird. Each of our members is of equal importance, and we learn off each other when there is a problem, and how to avoid problems. As a club we are affiliated with the A.B,A.
( Australian Birdbreeders Association ) which covers us with Public Liability Insurance, and we pay our dues each year. By doing this we are covered to have our various displays and Bird Shows throughout the year in our community.
Each year Towers Birdkeepers hold 3 bird shows in conjunction with the Charters Towers Show Grounds Committee, at the C.T. Show Grounds.
One at the Mother’s Day Markets, one at the Christmas Markets, and our Club plays a big part in the Caged Bird Show at the Charters Towers Annual Agricultural Show in July/August each year.
Although we have very few members, we make up for it in enthusiasm as was shown at our recent Mother’s Day show, where we had 85 exhibits from only 6 families.
To be part of Towers Birdkeepers you don’t have to have a lot of birds. Everyone has to start somewhere. A pair of Budgies may be all you need to get you keen enough to make it your hobby, and unless you get really big, it is fairly inexpensive, and only as time consuming as you want to make it.
Each month we have a newsletter sent out to members and other interested persons, plus all the clubs from Mackay north to Cairns, and in return, we receive newsletters from them.
Each year, one of these Clubs host the Northern Avian Society Conference. This is held on the long weekend in June. These Conferences consist of Aviary visits, and talks by people who are experts in various aspects of Bird Breeding and Aviculture.
These conferences are extremely informative and interesting, and can help in a huge way to enlighten us Northerners as to whats going on down south, new discoveries, and new products to make our own lives in Aviculture easier, and to solve any problems we may have encountered.
Towers Birdkeepers will host the Conference in 2008.
