G'day
My young family and I are thinking of moving to Charters Towers and leaving the rat race in suburban Perth behind. I am interested in knowing what its like to live and work in Charters towers. And more importantly what the locals think of the place :)

G'day Mick.
Welcome to the website.
Mate in a nut shell Charters Towers is very laid back style of living. Where the city meets the country. Quality living, clean air no traffic lights and always something going on. For mum and the kids there are many good schools and shopping. For dad, many pubs, clubs and RSL as well as a TAB and race track for a bet on the horses. And of course a great golf course with many members. Hay, for a small country town we even have a Macas and Big Roster as well a 2 pizza shops and fish and chip shops just to name a few. Wollworths and Bilo to buy ones food. A picture theatre for the latest movies and a drivein. Country music, rodeo, cricket, football (NRL), town pool, many city parks, the list goes on and on. So much to see and do.
A dollar spent in Charters Towers QLD, will go a lot further.
Then a dollar spent in Perth WA, the big city.
It is all about quality of life.
All the best mate.
Kelly.

Thanx for the reply, sounds bloody fantastic:) The last (and only) time I was In Charters Towers was way back in 1986 as a 16 year old on the way to Townsville. I hope you don't mind but I will probably be asking a lot more silly questions.
A town with no traffic lights and lots of pubs, a winning combination :)

So true mate. No one is really in a hurry here.
Sorry for the delay in your post showing on the forum. At the very start of the forum opening, members could post and it would show live straight away in the forum. And right from the start we had wacko people wanting to cause trouble, rant and carry on. So we now have to check every post before it is shown on the board. Moderate everything, which is a bit of a humbug, but as this is a family website, well you get the idea.

Hi Kelly, Mick & all others,
I'm new to the site, so apologies for any gaffs I make ... I am sure that will happen !
Hubby & I are thinking of moving to C.T. We are currently on the coast & victims of C. Larry, & other windy bits over the years.
We've always loved C.T., hubby's Mum & Dad were born there a long time ago, 1914 & 1912 respectively.
We both want to know the more "practical" side of things of life in the Towers, dog laws, rates, land prices, shopping etc.
I can see some stuff on this site that goes someway to answering those questions .... but I have many other q. to ask, like water ? Are bores plentiful ? Other stuff as well.
I'm not even sure I'm in the exact right place here Kelly, but I'll post it anyway.
Take Care.
Carolyn

Hello and welcome Carolyn,
The best place to ask your question on dog laws, rates, land prices etc. would be an email to our Charters Towers City Council (http://www.charterstowers.qld.gov.au/)
Are bores plentiful? - Yes but must be registered with the council.
With our website a family site, and because people might post things not nice (not you), our forum is under moderation, so all new posts made must be read first by our admin and mods. And if it is ok we will let it go live to the pubilc in our forum. So if you reply and it does not show, this will be why. Please give one of us time to read your post.
Hope this has been of help.
Kelly.

Hi Kelly,
Thanks for the welcome, much appreciated.
I have emailed the council & recieved a reply re: dog laws etc. I also learned from them that the shire is very small & that it's quiet possible that we may end up buying land the Dalrymple Shire if we buy out of town.
Some more silly questions. Are any areas of C.T. flood prone ? Do the local vets have a generally good reputation ?
Thanks again
Cheers Carolyn

Hello Carolyn,
Thats great the city council was of help. As for your question on flood areas in town, there are areas that in heavy rain will be cut off by flood water, low level crossings and such. On the edege of town such as the end of millchester road and the start of broughton road can be cut of from town in heavy rain. There are MANY more.
It really would be a good thing to ask the real estate person AND ask people next door and or close to where you would be looking to buy a place in the charters towers area.
If you would like to use this google map.
Street Directory for Chaters Towers where you can find your way around the city. (http://www.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Charters+Towers+QLD+Australia&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=52.68309,81.914062&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=15&ll=-20.06875,146.269054&spn=0.029628,0.054073&iwloc=addr)

Thankyou again for your reply Kelly ... I am sorry that I'm not so quick to reply as you, but I really appreciate your help, & I don't manage to get on the computer as much as I would like.
I did go & look at the map site you sent .. THANKYOU, much appreciated, & I will take into account your tips on local flooding ... + asking R.E.agents & next door neighbours are both good tips.
Being from Innisfail & having to endure floods nearly every year, makes me very aware ... we are up on a hill & stay fine & dry, but can't get to town for supplies. Not fun running out of loo paper !! But we managed :)
I also really really want to know about the vets generalised reputation.
My dogs are my babies, & I realise all vets will have people that either adore them or hate them.
You may, or may not not be an animal person, & I understand that, we are all different ... that is o.k. But the vets are a major "thing", for me.
Everything you have told me + contact with C.T. Council, & looking at the Dalrymple Shire Site , is leading us to making the move.
I just need to know, for now, what most people think of the local vets.
I'm probably gunna be a pain, & ask other stuff, & I apologise in advance.
I also thank you for info already given + links.
Much appreciated.
Cheers Carolyn

Hello Carolyn,
We are happy we could help.
I also really really want to know about the vets generalised reputation.
I just need to know, for now, what most people think of the local vets.
As far as we know, our Charters Towers vets reputation it is very high.
We have been there a few times, and it was very good service, she was very nice.
But if you did want to ask a quick question, please use these details.
Charters Towers Veterinary Surgery
177 Gill Street
Charters Towers
Phone : 0747 872644
The best way to put your mind at ease, would be to give them a quick ring. They also have a fax number and an after hours phone number. But it would be better if they gave that to you.
This way we hope you would then know in your heart that all was ok, as we can understand how you feel about your dogs.
Kelly.
