WANDERERS ON THE ROAD AGAIN
Queensland stars old and new will fly the flag for cricket in Central Queensland this month as the Wanderers (Qld) Cricketers Club heads out on the road again for its annual tour.
The tour, the 36th annual tour to be conducted by Wanderers, will visit Yeppoon, Mackay, Bowen, Home Hill, Charters Towers, Blackwater and Taroom.
With the support of Queensland Cricket and the Bulls Masters, the tour will feature the likes of former Test great Ian Healy, ex-Queensland fast bowler Greg Rowell and current XXXX GOLD Queensland Bulls players Nathan Reardon and Ryan Broad.
Healy will play in Charters Towers (http://www.charters-towers.com) and Blackwater.
Former Bulls batsman and current University of Queensland player Steve Farrell will also tour with the group, as will ex-Queensland Sheffield Shield leg-spinner Dennis Lillie.
Teenage off-spinner Cameron Brimblecombe will also make the trip, with the St George product earning a Queensland Academy of Sport contract last month.
Brimblecombe, who plays for the Gold Coast, made his Futures League 2nd XI debut last season for the QAS and has been training and playing practice matches with the Bulls during the winter.
Both Broad and Reardon, who grew up in Gladstone, will be involved in the latest venture for Australian Cricket this year, having both secured contracts in the inaugural KFC T20 Big Bash League.
Broad will play for the Brisbane Heat while Reardon will turn out for the Melbourne Renegades in the eight-team, city-based competition that will held in December and January.
The Wanderers tour gets underway on Wednesday 17 August in Yeppoon, with matches in Mackay (Friday 19 August), Bowen (Saturday 20 August), Home Hill (Sunday 21 August), Charters Towers (Tuesday 23 August), Blackwater (Thursday 25 August) and Taroom (Saturday 27 August).
Free coaching clinics will be held for local children before each match while non-cricketing members of the touring group will also play lawn bowls and golf at each venue.
The Wanderers were formed in Queensland in 1933 by the then Queensland Governor, Sir Leslie Wilson. They have conducted an annual tour of regional Queensland and NSW since 1976 and visited more than 60 towns, with tour leader Lew Cooper in charge for each trip.
