Top action was on show at the second Palm Island Rodeo on August 15 and 16 when angry bulls weighing up to 1000kg definitely got the better of the cowboys who competed.
More than 80 competitors took part and 1500 spectators attended.
The first night was for all competitors, while the second was for indigenous riders only.
On night one, the calf ride was won by Andrew Willis Jnr (Townsville) from Joyce Tapp (Palm Island) and Fred Ross (Palm Island). In the novice bull ride, Shane Morrison (Charters Towers) won from Gavin Bramwell (Palm Island), and in the open bull ride Mark Griffiths (Charters Towers) beat Roy 'Boy' Murray (Palm Island).
On night two in the indigenous only section, Kowanyama rider Telwyn Gibbo was the only rider to stay on a bucking animal for the full eight seconds and he took out the novice section in the indigenous section.
No rider stayed on a bull for the required time in the open bull or juvenile rides.
It was a non alcohol event and organised by Pauline Shortjoe and her hard working husband Shaun.
"We are delighted with the turnout and next year it will be even bigger," Shaun said.
John Moss from Bucko Billy Rodeo Promotions ran the rodeo events and was also the judge, along with Darcy Davidson of Charters Towers.
Bulls for the open bull rides were provided by contractor Gant Livirsage from Charters Towers, and Keith Poole from Townsville provided the animals for the junior bull and calf rides.
Once again the rodeo announcer was Justin Price from Townsville and the shoot boss was Darryl Tremlow, Brisbane.
"This is the most dangerous sport on Earth and these are the meanest and angriest bulls you will get anywhere," Justin said.
The clowns were indigenous Mount Isa ringer Kel James who works on Flora Station 130km from the western city, and Mark Griffiths from Charters Towers.
Mr Moss also praised secretary Deidre Bailey, assistant secretary Cerian Bailey and their helper Lorraine Bartsch.
Mr Moss said the angry bulls varied in weight from between 500kg and 1000kg and would prove tough for all competitors.
Open bulls included Rampage, Stock Squad, Gun Metal, Sirus, Sister Fury, Little Bird, Romeo, Nasa, Telstra and Mexican Gunslinger.
Novice bulls were The Pig, Rip Curl, Merluma, Black Cat, Agent Orange, Black Magic, Hornet and Destination Unknown.
Mr Moss paid tribute to Pauline and Shaun Shortjoe for their hard work in making the rodeo a success.
"Without them, this wouldn't have gone ahead," he said.
