Whats on in Hughenden Nth Qld
A valuable contribution of $200,000 from the State Government to the Flinders Shire EcoWalk.
Phil Reeves, MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier presented a cheque for $200,000 to Flinders Deputy Mayor, Cr Greg Jones at the site of the rapidly developing “Eco-Walk on Flinders”.
Mr Reeves, the Member for Mansfield, was on a goodwill tour of the northern region with State MP for Mt Isa, Betty Kiernan.
The cheque was available from the State Government’s Legacy Infrastructure Program that is providing $100 million of capital works to mark Queensland’s 150th anniversary in 2009.
Mr Jones said the cheque, which represented half the $400,000 project, was much appreciated.
“Council has been busy for the past six months changing the face of the riverbank from an over-grown, weed affected area to a rapidly-emerging scenic park interpreting the natural flora of the shire area,” he said.

Charters Towers, north eastern Queensland, Australia, in the upper Burdekin River basin. Charters Towers is known mostly for its heritage and gold mining history. Charters Towers has a large number of elegant and historically significant buildings most of which are located on Gill and Mosman Streets. Charters Towers financial district is in Gill Street. Gill St is far more the commercial heart of Charters Towers. One of Gill Street's more interesting buildings is the Post Office of the year 1892, with a huge clock tower that dominates the town. The clock was added to the building in 1898 after being imported from England. Also in Gill Street is the former Bank of New South Wales of the year 1880, which is a near perfect example of the Classical Revival style of architecture which was all the rage at the time. One of the most interesting buildings in Charters Towers can be found in Mosman Street, known as the Zara Clark museum, a national trust owned and run centre. It has an interesting collection of local Charters Towers memorabilia. So much to see and do in our country town in the outback of Australia.
Things to see, Tourist Information, Motels, Hotels, Bed & Breakfast/Guesthouses,Farm & Eco Holidays, Caravan Parks, Restaurants, Domestic architecture, Lookouts, Swimming and Fishing, Country Music Festival, Historic places, Rodeo, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Cricket, Netball, Superb historic buildings. Close to the city heart is Lissner Park. To the west of the town centre, in Hodginson Street is the old Court House, and between Hodginson and Gill Streets one can see the St Columba's Bell Tower, the styling make it a building of exceptional beauty. No visit to Charters Towers would be complete without a guided tour through the old Venus Gold Battery.
10 Days in the Towers - The Country Music Festival
The Charters Towers Country Music Festival, occurring on the May Day weekend each year, has been incorporated into 10 Days in the Towers which, is carried out over ten days filled with line dancing, bush poetry, workshops, street busking and very much more to see and do over this time.
There are a few good lookouts which offer excellent views over the town of Charters Towers and the surrounding area. Towers Hill Lookout and Rotary Lookout. The best is undoubtedly Towers Hill Lookout which is about 125 metres high at the top of towers hill, with an amphitheatre where a film about the history of Charters Towers screens in the evening. The another local lookout is the Rotary Lookout, keep a lookout for signs posted off Mosman Street, to find your way to this one.
